Digital Infrared Photography

This summer, I have been capturing many Infrared (IR) images at Seattle's Arboretum, Gasworks Park, Kubota Gardens, and Discovery Park. Images are taken with a Nikon D80 and Hoya R72 IR Filter.

To create these surreal scenes, I use a filter that blocks out almost all light except for the infrared spectrum. Green foliage appears white and the required long exposures add a unique motion to the clouds.

Pioneer Square

I am now sharing a studio in Seattle's historic pioneer square district. Last week, I had some time after a session to explore the neighborhood.

City Streams

My favorite night subjects are the urban highway streams of light. I am always amazed at the patterns and flow of the night travelers.

Clear Day in Seattle

The clear weather in Seattle motivated me to get a few sunset and night images from the most famous Northwest photography location - Kerry Park. I worked my way through the 20-30 other photographers for a space to drop my tripod. Usually, the clouds are better for sunsets and Mount Rainier can be seen, but I am happy with the results for my first "postcard" session of 2008.

Southern Louisiana (Cajun Country)

My latest photo trip was into the surreal looking swamps of southern Louisiana. The submerged cypress trees covered in Spanish moss had a very eerie look to them and the still water created some amazing mirror style reflections. It was the off season for wildlife in the swamp but I did get to see baby alligators, turtles, owls, and many varieties of cranes. Much different than the landscapes and critters of the Northwest.
